Scientific name: Hemigraphis colorata ‘Exotica’
Common names: Purple Waffle Plant, Red Ivy, Metal Leaf
Type: Tropical perennial foliage plant
Origin: Southeast Asia (notably India, Java, and the Maluku Islands)
Foliage: Striking metallic purple undersides; green to silvery tops.
Growth habit: Low-growing, creeping, or trailing—excellent as a groundcover or hanging plant.
Height: 6–12 inches (15–30 cm) tall.
Spread: Up to 18 inches (45 cm) wide.
Prefers bright, indirect light.
Can tolerate low light but color fades; too much direct sun scorches leaves.
Keep soil consistently moist, not soggy.
Water when the top inch of soil feels dry.
Avoid letting it dry out completely.
Ideal temperature: 60–80°F (15–27°C).
Humidity: Likes high humidity; mist regularly or use a humidifier.
Well-draining, rich potting mix—peat-based or houseplant mix works well.
Add perlite for better aeration.
Fertilize monthly in spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength.
Reduce feeding in fall/winter.
